Behind the Onset of MND

Motor Neuron Disease (MND) begins with the gradual breakdown of motor neurons, the nerve cells responsible for controlling movement. In some cases, genetic mutations appear to be the culprits, particularly in families where the disease runs in generations. These mutations may disrupt the normal functioning of motor neurons, setting the stage for their decline.Another suspect is oxidative stress, where an imbalance in free radicals overwhelms the body’s natural defenses, leading to damage at the cellular level. This wear and tear can weaken neurons, making them vulnerable over time. Then there’s glutamate, a chemical messenger in the brain. While essential in small amounts, too much glutamate can overstimulate neurons, causing them to malfunction and eventually die—a phenomenon known as excitotoxicity.Chronic inflammation is another piece of the puzzle. When the immune system is in overdrive, it can attack healthy neurons, contributing to their slow and progressive decline.
